. . . In His care, we can find this precious love and strengthen it to eternity.
Genuine Marriage Love looks to God
There is one loving God, who has revealed Himself to humankind as the Lord Jesus Christ. Marriages based on a strong belief in the Lord and His teachings flourish because He is the source of all that is good and true, and He alone has the power to help couples overcome the many obstacles to a loving relationship. Genuine marriage is not a state of infatuation, but rather a mutual looking above self to a Greater Power for help and guidance, and as a source of fulfillment.
Spiritual Growth and Marriage
Spiritual life and marriage work together hand in hand. To the degree that a couple uses the basic principles of their Christian faith in their marriage they will be blessed in their marital relationship. The Lord has taught us so much about forgiveness, going the extra mile, and faithfully fulfilling our duties and our promises. When we apply these same teachings to marriage we set a course toward happier lives. There is no better opportunity to become a spiritual person than in learning to live, work, and play together with a life-partner. It is often said that charity begins in the home, and when we learn the art of love with our spouse, we are in turn blessed with a rich and meaningful companionship. The Lord has said, "Give and it will be given unto you." This is true in marriage as in any other relationship.
Marriages have their challenges. If a couple believes they will get by on love alone, they may be in for some rough realizations. Love needs to be clothed in truth. The teachings of the Lord's Word are that clothing. They give a person structure for that love, and like clothing, they protect the love from harm. For instance, many marriages are challenged by times of temptation. Whatever the nature of this temptation, shunning selfishness and lusts as sins against God and as hurtful to marriage guards against the destructive forces that would harm our love relationships. People make mistakes, and everyone has their ups and downs in marriage, but when religion and marriage walk hand in hand, the means for continued development remain at hand.
Marriage and Eternity
Those who truly love each other will dwell together in heaven after death. Their love and their care for each other remains, and grows. Their joy in working together in service to God and to other fellow human beings flourishes, and takes on a newness each day.
Good marriages are active marriages. In heaven, each partner works in harmony with the other in acts of charity and love. An idle life is not only a dull life, but it can lead to lethargy and self-centeredness. Those who approach marriage as a means for self-satisfaction alone will find this same dissatisfaction with their relationship. Marriage brings beautiful blessings, but the blessings come into their fullness through acts of unselfishness and charity to the neighbor.
Married couples who use the tools for spiritual growth given to us in the Word, and who act together in charity toward the neighbor, create within their relationship a heavenly way of life. This heavenly marriage continues on into the life after death.
